Designed for Joy
Pleasurelab makes sextoys. But Pleasurelab is more than just a brand; it is a platform that gives young designers the opportunity to accomplish their dreams and ambitions.
We started out as an online store, a vendor of toys, and that yielded a lot of valuable knowledge. Which products are available, which products are highly valued by consumers, what characteristics make a toy transcend mediocrity?
We discovered that there are a number of principles and mechanisms that return again and again, in different interpretations. On the other hand, there’s a lot of innovation in the realm of sextoys; innovative products emerge almost on a daily basis. But sometimes the most brilliant ideas don’t succeed.
Just a good idea is not enough; consumers set high standards when it comes to the appearance, the ease of use and the price of a product, to name just three important factors.
Design platform
With Pleasurelab, we wanted to translate this know-how to a range of innovation-driven products.
Sure, we knew how to sell toys, but actually designing, developing and producing a product is a different ball game. There was a lot to learn, so we decided that we needed an ‘innovation platform’, rather than just a brand; a partnership where young designers from TU Delft can combine their creativity and design skills with our existing knowledge about what people enjoy. So, with this platform we focus on developing products that are designed for joy.
Actually, designing a sextoy is a dream job for a product designer, because all elements that make product design such a beautiful craft come together: ergonomics, aesthetics, choice of materials and tactility, mechanics, usability, etc.
The result is a product that people have an intimate relationship with, and that can really make a significant contribution to a more enjoyable, more fun, more comfortable life. And if all goes well in ways that people haven’t imagined before, through surprising and groundbreaking innovations.
designers
Pleasurelab works together with TU Delft, one of the world’s most renowned institutions in the field of product design.
Lisa Kleisen is the designer of the Moonshake Massager. She is still studying industrial design at the prestigious TU Delft University. Working at CLS Healthcare to design the Moonshake Massager was a dream opportunity for Lisa. ‘I was very keen to react to a Facebook advert by CLS, because there I can combine my design skills with my fascination for the sextoy industry. For an early age on, I was interested in sexuality and everything around it. My friends always saw me as somebody who is a bit ahead of the rest, and were even saying that I should become a sextoy-designer.
With Pleasurelab, we focus on innovation and engineering. Ergonomics, aesthetics and sustainability are equally important. I realized that my own opinions and preferences shouldn’t be leading. We do a lot of research with testpanels that fill out online questionnaires about existing toys. Its interesting to see that, for instance age, or experience with toys, determine what people like.
I want to design products that prove to be a valuable addition to peoples lives. So no fancy novelties that you use three times and then dispose. But also think of the disabled or elderly who may have trouble with sex in some way or another, but of course still have their needs. I would be very nice to develop products for that purpose.
research
Although we know a thing or two about people’s intimate preferences, when it comes to innovation there is still a profound need for research.
Research among focus groups, often consisting of hundreds of consumers, provide us with support to try new things, or to adapt existing concepts in a different way.
If you want to participate in the development of new products, by occasionally answering an (anonymous) questionnaire or by testing prototypes, please send an email to [email protected].
Development

Currently we are developing an innovative male masturbator for which a crowdfunding will soon be started.
